The Legislative Assembly approved the new taxes Monday night.

 

 


Casino Tax

 

A bill calling for the taxation of casinos and call centers in Costa Rica was approved in the Legislative Assembly.

Casinos will be taxed 10 percent of their net profit, and the funds will go toward public security.

The tax on call centers will depend on the number of employees working at each company.

Immigration procedures can now be scheduled in post offices

President Laura Chinchilla on Thursday inaugurated “Electronic Services Windows” (VES), a new electronic platform to facilitate immigration procedures for foreigners residing in the country.

Spain's Telefónica  has filed a complaint with Costa Rican telecoms watchdog Sutel, accusing state telecoms operator ICE of anticompetitive practices in promotions for its prepaid services, known as Kölbi, local newspapers reported.

Costa Rica has introduced a new annual tax on all corporate structures, pegged to average public sector salaries. For ‘active companies’ registered in Costa Rica, i.e. those undertaking commercial activities, the tax is equal to half the average monthly base salary of a public sector employee.
